Near the San Jose Arena and Diridon Station, the former Del Monte Plant 51 packing plant is being rehabilitated for residential loft housing. Plant 51 opened for business more than 95 years ago. The plant is a four-building complex and one of only three remaining former California Fruit Packers Association (Calpak) cannery sites in San Jose. The association ultimately adopted the Del Monte name. The Castle Group, the developer, plans to keep the buildings largely intact. Plans include preserving many of the plant's historic features including heavy timbers and beams, exposed brick, and vaulted spaces. Lowney has worked closely with the developer to evaluate geotechnical and environmental site conditions and to oversee environmental cleanup.
