Calpine C*Power's Los Esteros Critical Energy Facility

Lowney Associates provided environmental, geotechnical, and construction observation services for Calpine C*Power's Los Esteros Critical Energy Facility. The project consisted of building a new peaker plant on approximately 15 acres of a 55-acre former nursery in San Jose. Peaker plants are designed to operate during high-demand periods. This plant can produce 180 megawatts of power; potential future expansion will increase its capacity to 270 megawatts. Lowney conducted an environmental investigation to help Calpine C*Power evaluate the suitability of the property. Remediation activities included the cleanup of pesticide-impacted soil and the removal of abandoned underground storage tanks. Lowney provided a full range of geotechnical services including earthquake engineering, detailed liquefaction and settlement analyses, and GPS/GIS mapping. Calpine C*Power is contracted to deliver power to the California Department of Water Resources through March 2006.
